“Ess is the moniker of Sacramento, Ca resident Jesse Phillips, a musician who has put out a variety of music spanning different styles and genres. From his prior solo work as Ellie Fortune, as well collaborations with freak-folk weirdo Dead Western and looping avant-pop artist Appetite, Phillips has gone drone on his latest opus S/T. It’s a funeral march of foreboding keyboards, tremolo guitars, and eerily distanced vocals that will produce nerve-rattling nightmares. Caught somewhere between the dark grandeur of Swans and the sinister undercurrent of the most recent Liars album, S/T is a real grower and one gorgeous descent into the cacophonous depths.”
